When to Start Your Spring Garden Tidy-Up

Spring feels like the natural time to rush outside and tackle the garden after months of winter. The days are getting longer, the weather is milder, and there's an urge to clear away dead leaves and overgrown bits. But timing matters more than you might think. Starting your spring garden work too early can actually set back your plants and undo the protection that winter growth provides.

The key is waiting until the risk of hard frosts has genuinely passed. In many parts of the UK, this means holding off until mid-April or even May, depending on where you live. Perennials and shrubs that look dead during winter are often just dormant, and cutting them back too soon exposes tender new growth to late frosts. If a cold snap hits after you've pruned, you can damage the plant or even kill it entirely.

What to do now

If you're eager to get started, there are safer early spring tasks. Clear fallen leaves and debris from beds and borders, as these can harbour pests and diseases. You can tidy up around established trees and shrubs without heavy pruning. If you have areas that stayed relatively tidy through winter, a light rake and tidy is fine. Just avoid the aggressive cutting back and hard pruning that many gardeners instinctively reach for.

When to go harder

Once you're confident the worst of the frost is behind you, that's when to tackle the bigger jobs. Prune back ornamental grasses and perennials that you left standing for winter interest. Cut back shrubs that need reshaping. This is also the right time to get serious about lawn care after the dormant months, whether that's scarifying to remove thatch or dealing with any bare patches.

Why professional timing helps

If you're unsure about what's safe to cut back in your garden, or if you're worried about getting the timing wrong, that's where experience makes a real difference. A professional gardener knows which plants need protecting at different stages and which tasks are genuinely safe to start early. They can also assess your specific garden and local conditions, rather than following a generic calendar.

At Sprout & Spade Gardens, we handle the spring garden tidy-up with the right timing for your plants. Whether you need us to clear winter debris, wait for the right moment to prune, or tackle everything once conditions are safe, we take the guesswork out of spring gardening.
